Sugar Shot to Space 2-stage Project

Sugar Shot to Space 2-stage Project

Postby rick m » Mon Mar 09, 2015 6:51 am

After trying to develop our 'Dual-Pulse" motor for a number of years we are taking a more conventional route with a 2-stage vehicle.

We have successfully fired our prototype sustainer and yesterday successfully fired for the second time our booster motor. We had help with mounting the motor on the static test stand by friends from both SpaceX and XCOR...what a bunch of great guys to work with. We will do one additional static test and if successful the motor will be then be flown for the first time.

Yesterday we did our first staging attempt. The avionics worked great, separation timing, gps tracking, and telemetry but we had a zipper on the sustainer...but recovered everything intact. Our 6" to 4" vehicle is coming along, our fin cat for the booster should be ready this week. Some of the members talking orbital but I still want to 'crawl' to space before 'walking' in orbit.

We now have four consecutive successful sugar booster motor burns and three other successful flight motors for university students.
Finally, some reliability with the sugar motors, never in the program before have we had more than two burns without a CATO.
