SS2S 12" (300mm) booster motor

We poured our first 12 x 20" (300 x 500mm) grain for our suborbital booster motor last Saturday at FAR and will be casting more next month for a static test. We will also be static testing our 6" (150mm) second stage motor next month. For the booster motor, each grain has a mass of 130 pounds (~55 km) of propellant.

Big step -- very exciting! Best of luck to everyone at Sugar Shot to Space!

Thanks Jay. The first grain looked great and we finished casting a second last Saturday and a third flight of the Phoenix testing electronics.

Congrats on the straight up test flight as Jay said best of luck to all the team and hope things go as well in your next steps

Thanks Alex...

We had a very successful static test of the short 2-grain 12" (300 mm) Q-impulse sugar motor today at the FAR site.

That seems to be the same as the last video you posted of the launch test not a static test

Oops, you're right, the wrong link, try this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeOVhQKnTfg

Based on the video it looks as though the exhaust was slightly under-expanded, is that by design?

The nozzle on this motor was already fabricated before the final specs of the motor were decided. Also, this motor was planned to simply test the viability of casting such large sugar grains that had never been attempted before.

The actual flight booster for the space attempt will have 6 grains (780 pounds of propellant).

So confident am I of making sugar propellant motors that we skipped doing static tests of our new 6" (150 mm) O-5755 motor. We successfully flew it solo and next will be as the booster for our successful 4" (100 mm) motor. After that, the 6" will become the second stage sustainer on our full scale 12" for a space shot.
